Angst

A poem of self-betrayal

Photo by Priscilla Du Preez on Unsplash

Angst

Rises like the proverbial tide

Starts at my feet

And consumes me

Inch by inch

Part by part

Thought by thought

Until my breath is stolen

My body frozen

My mind not my own

Angst

Slithers up behind me

Catching me unawares

Coiling around my soul

Squeezing

Ever tighter

Ever stronger

Ever more sinister

Until my eyes do not see reality

My ears do not hear truth

My voice does not speak verity

And I cease to be me

Angst
