Dead Ends

One day
You wake up
And look around
To find yourself
In a place you don’t recognize
A place you never thought you’d be

And you wonder
How did I get here?
Where did I go astray?

And you step back
Slowly
Trying to backtrack
To retrace the vaguely familiar path
That was at once you
And not you

And you wonder
How did I lose myself?
When did I lose myself?

And the road back is muddy
And slow
And fraught with tripwires
But you take each wobbly step
Because you can’t be
Where you were
Anymore
