I Lingered

Photo by Atharva Tulsi on Unsplash

In the silence I lingered

Wondering . . .

Agonizing . . .

Waiting to see if something . . . anything . . .

Was still there

I lingered in the shadows

Waiting to see if something . . . anything . . .

Would come into the light

Nothing came

I lingered in the light

Waiting to see if something . . . anything . . .

Would emerge from the shadows

Nothing came

I lingered at the door

Waiting to see if something . . . anything . . .

Would beckon me back

Nothing came

In the silence I turned

And walked away

Slowly . . .

Lingering . . .

Waiting to see if something . . . anything . . .

Would follow me

Nothing followed

And I did not look back

For fear of turning to stone
