Memories For Sale

We sat at the same table that once held

Thanksgiving turkeys

and Birthday cakes

and homework

and science projects

Where we each learned to read

and do long division

and bake cookies

and color Easter eggs

Who knew then that there were last times that we would do each of those

There was joy

and heartbreak

Sweet words

and bitter ones

Laughter

and tears

The table at the center of our lives

now being retired

It was so much more than a table

It was our collective heart and soul

Now we quibble over the price to tag it with

for the house sale

So much more than a table

But so much less to anyone else

$20 for my memories

$5 off because the varnish is bubbling in the spot where I spilled nail polish getting ready for my first date
